About
The Story Behind the Music
The origin of Track Zero
Scott C. Mallett began writing music as a teenager, performing with a band in his hometown of Lewiston, Idaho. In the summer of 1987, at sixteen years old, he planned what was supposed to be his introduction as a songwriter: an outdoor concert built around his original music.
The concert never happened. Thunderstorms saw to that. The band broke up shortly afterward, and Mallett walked away from performing. But the music continued to come.
For nearly four decades, songs popped into his mind, living only in memory as melodies and arrangements. Most were quickly disregarded and forgotten; Mallett had, after all, walked away from that part of his life. But a few pesky ones etched themselves into his head, existing under the promise that one day he would record them and turn them into reality.
That place became Track Zero: the imaginary track where a song exists, known only to the composer, before anyone else has heard it.
In December 2025, a friend heard an old, rough recording of one of Mallett's songs and asked to hear more. Inspired by the request, Mallett finally began emptying Track Zero.
Track Zero is, in many ways, a clearing of the vault: finishing old songs, taking care of unfinished business, and finally giving a voice to music that had waited years to be heard. But it is also about wiping the slate clean. With those songs finally recorded, Track Zero closes one chapter and clears the way for whatever comes next.
His debut album brings together songs written across different periods of his life, from songs written when he was only fourteen to those written as recently as a decade ago. Rather than chasing a single genre, the record follows wherever each song wants to go, moving through rock, acoustic music, piano-driven songwriting, blues, and other influences.
Track Zero arrives in October 2026.
